A GLIMPSE OF US
BY LAUREN NAIDOO AND JADA PAUL (2024)

“A Glimpse of Us” is an audio-visual live experienc created  to evoke the emotions of nostalgia drawn from the raw emotion of retrieving past moments of girlhood. Our connected particle systems are set to archival childhood audios to create abstract moving memories. Our artistic concepts were very focused on lightness, movement, and airiness, which paired with our own conceptual ideas of fleeting and changing memories throughout life. We wanted our memory spheres to feel true to us in colour and pair well as a trio, keeping the colours bright and dimensional to move with a sense of space. Our initial visual inspiration was guided by MidJourney making artwork that mimicked layered pink material that held movement and depth. This was reflected in our choice of TouchDesigner medium, to create this same flowing effect to the eye.

AFFINITY

“Affinity” is a live performance bonded by performing arts and creative coding projections. We created audio-reactive displays using Touchdesigner that paired well visually with our intended body movements and choreography. We knew we wanted to make a piece that harboured a connection and explored that between two humans. Our ideas were very centered around the push and pull of partner work and how we could create something that tells that story. We were able to foster this connection with the creative choices behind the choreography and the simplicity of the visuals.

“Garden Ecosystem” is a particle simulation created in OpenProcessing that simulates both thriving and dying floral families within the Okanagan Region. Research on these plants behavioural patterns and dying rates was done to create soil and sun quadrants in which the particular plant particle could thrive or die off depending on which area they spawned in the simulation. The simulation itself is reactive and different everytime based on the initial birthing position. This project was meant to simulate life and death while visually bringing attention to the beauty of both.
